Here is what the proceeds from the first annual Mind Over Matter (M.O.M.) race have helped us do thus far, and will help us do later this year:
Michigan Library Materials
Your donation has allowed us to provide mental health/suicide prevention/survivor support materials in local, public, community, and university libraries across Michigan. This allows people to go to their local library and obtain FREE information about mental health awareness, depression, suicide prevention and survivor support. The materials are being offered free of charge to Michigan libraries.
National Survivors of Suicide Conference
Your donation has enabled local AFSP chapters to broadcast the National Survivors of Suicide annual conference and have their own "mini-conferences" in the Ann Arbor and Metro Detroit. The conferences are complete with guest speakers, Q & A sessions, refreshments, and are FREE to all Michigan citizens.
Teen Public Service Announcement (PSA)
Your donation allowed us to offer the AFSP Teen Public Service Announcement (PSA)
to all local TV stations in Michigan to create awareness and hopefully reach out to teens in need of help. The PSA encourages teens to tell someone they trust if they are feeling overwhelmed, depressed, and/or suicidal.
Survivor Outreach Program
Survivors of suicide are nine times more likely than the general public to take their own lives. AFSP has developed a program that we are rolling out all over Michigan, beginning with the Metro Detroit area, Livingston County, and Washtenaw County. This program pairs survivors who are at least two years past their loss with the newly bereaved to offer guidance, support, and to supply information about services that are available locally (support groups, counseling centers, etc.). Your donation allowed the AFSP Michigan Chapter to send 10 volunteers to training in New York City for this comprehensive and beneficial program. The Survivor Outreach Program will be FREE to all Michigan citizens.
College Film
Your donation is currently allowing us to offer the AFSP College Film, "The Truth About Suicide; Real Stories of Depression in College", to many universities and colleges across Michigan. The aim of this 27-minute film is to present a recognizable picture of depression and other problems associated with suicide, as they are commonly experienced by college students and other young adults. The film comes with a facilitator's guide so it can be shown by guidance counselors, dormitory RA's, professors, teachers, and the lay person. The film is FREE to all colleges and universities who agree to participate and make it available to Michigan students/families.
Teen Suicide Prevention Program
We are currently working on a Teen Suicide Prevention Program that will allow us to go into Michigan high schools and speak about depression and mental health awareness. This program will be released in the fall and it will be FREE to all students.
